DECEMBER 2007
Volume 8, Number 3
From the Director
For many of you, the
holiday season is marked by the
anticipation of spending quality time with your son or
daughter during the long winter recess. In your mind,
the visit home will be regimented with shopping trips,
excursions, elaborate meals and the usual family
rituals. But your son or daughter may have other
ideas. In his or her mind, the visit home will be filled
with much-needed rest (some will “hibernate” in the depths of their
own beds), relaxation, late nights, and the desire to
spend their waking hours with old friends (time with
family may or may not be a priority).
As you look forward and prepare for your son or
daughter’s extended visit home later this month, I encourage
you to be mindful of these differing expectations so the
time together at home is enjoyed by all. To assist you
with the winter recess, we re-posted a useful article on the
Terp Parent Web site called “Home for the Holidays” (click here to read
the
article). There are also several excellent books
that provide insight into this important process. I
personally recommend Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to
Understanding the College Years by Karen Coburn and
Madge Treeger and You’re on Your Own Now (but I’m
Here if You Need Me): Mentoring Your Child During the
College Years by Marjorie Savage. Click here to be directed to a complete list of
resources.
You are welcome to call the Parent Helpline at
301.314.8429 or write to us at
parents@umd.edu. We are available from 8:30 a.m.
until 5:00 p.m. (EST), Monday - Friday. As a reminder,
the University will close for Winter Break on Saturday, December 22,
2007 and will reopen on Wednesday, January 2, 2008.
Enjoy your time together, and please let us know if
there is anything we can do to assist you or your
student. Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
Brian
L. Watkins
Director
